Once a problem of developed countries, obesity is on a rapid rise in low - and middle-income countries, affecting adults and children, particularly in urban settings. Strategies to prevent and manage obesity include calls for reductions in sugar intake. In this conjunction, efforts to support healthy food choices have included the use of low- or no-calorie sweeteners. Steviol glycoside sweetener is a safe, natural, zero-calorie sweetener derived from the leaves of the stevia plant.
