Big wheels keep on turnin’: The Flash’s bus driver of the year Take yourself out to a ballgame! By: Amy Howard By: Theresa Zalewski Flash Staff Reporter Flash reporter Every year there is a faculty member that is named Teacher of the Year; however, this year the Flash would like to recognize a group that rarely gets mentioned. This recognition goes to Bus Drivers. Every morning our bus drivers get up while all of us are still sleeping and prepare themselves to be at work on time, to pick us students up and have us to school on time. This year, a bus driver proved to be extra dedicated and caring when she was diagnosed with cancer, went through treatments and still managed to find timer to stay loyal to her students on her routes and continued to drive. Bus 31 is the bus and Mrs. Bobby is her name. Mrs. Bobby is the type of person who brings a smile to your face when all you want to do is frown. Bobby, as most know her, is loved by everyone that she’s driven in the past and everyone that she drives in the present. Despite her battle with cancer, Bobby has continued to make everyone happy, even though this was the most devastating chapter of her life. Bobby is truly and inspiration, a hard worker, and an overall amazing person; this is why Bobby is this years, and the first, Bus Driver of the Year. Deeetroit Tiiiigers. The true story behind the Vitamin Water fiasco By: Josh Cousineau Assistant Editor Love is the movement By Morgan Stovall Vitamin Water is no longer the exciting treat it once was. For some, it’s become a part everyday school life: walk into the line, buy a vitamin water, eat lunch. The doors to the school’s fridge may be slamming shut on Vitamin Water. A contract between Macomb County schools and the Coca-Cola and 7UP Companies is the cause of this controversy. The contract states that ONLY Coca Cola products or 7UP/Dr. Pepper products may be sold to students. “Neither Coca Cola or 7UP are offering products that we need to sell,” School Store manager Mr. Dave Moutrie said. “We’re attempting to help students make healthier lifestyle choices, and sell better products.” In this aspect, both 7UP and Coke fall short. Aside from Dasani water, Powerade, and diet cola, they offer nothing that is a healthier option to their regular products. 7UP only offers diet products, and not much else. Other than the zero calorie diet sodas, the rest of the drinks have almost the same amount of calories as any soda itself. The Vitamin Water’s disappearance is still a shock to some, and won’t be taken very well by its fans. “I drink it everyday,” Kevin Quertermous, freshman, said. “It’s pretty lame that it’s getting taken away.” Continued on page 7 Flash Staff Reporter On my way back to my seat from the lunch line, I walked past a group of girls and it was almost impossible to miss them all wearing these “ To Write Love On Her Arms” shirts. I figured it was another batch of trendy tees but my curiosity increased with the number of people I saw wearing them. So I ‘googled’ these six words only to find that these shirts had a lot more to say than I ever could have thought. To Write Love On Her Arms (T.W.L.O.H.A.) all started with one woman, and her struggle through her early years. She experienced things at just 19 years old that most people shouldn’t. She was caught up with many uncontrollable drug and alcohol addictions that clinics were turning her away. Her close friend Jamie Tworkowski, founder of the organization, helped her through her struggle and found a way to help many going through the same kinds of things. T.W.L.O.H.A. is a non-profit organization which supports and spreads awareness of the many teens involved with self-harm and self-mutilation. These issues of suicide, addiction, cutting and depression are rising issues no one is willing to acknowledge. Tworkowski is working on changing that. He’s making all the difference one person at a time and getting as many people involved as possible. The Orlando based organization gets the majority of it’s exposure through bands such as, Anberlin, Switchfoot, Sleep At Last, Thrice, Copeland, Jimmy Eat World and several more who support and discuss the issues. T.W.L.O.H.A. accepts donations and sells t-shirts, hats, and accessories with a variety of slogans from their website www.twloha.com to spread the awareness of the cause. Hoping to spread the awareness throughout the country, they have recently joined with Anberlin on tour while promoting their new album. The band gives informational speeches during their performances. “T.W.L.O.H.A. basically shows you that sometimes growing up means letting go,” said freshman, Chelsea Monforte. “Once all of a person’s pent up anger is gone, it helps you better deal with the pain, without self-infliction. I think is organization is amazing and I am behind it and everything it d
