What Is “Authentic” Pilates?

The word Pilates now describes a remarkably broad range of workouts.

There are traditional mat exercises, classical apparatus work and instructor-training systems rooted in the original teachings. There are also contemporary classes that incorporate elements of strength training, cardio, mobility work and other fitness disciplines.

For newcomers, that variety can be exciting, but for teachers concerned with preserving the original method, however, it raises a different question: How much can a method change before it becomes something else?

Pace believes understanding the principles behind Pilates is essential. The original method was not created simply as a collection of exercises. Joseph Pilates developed a system built around controlled movement, concentration, precision, breathing and the relationship between the mind and body.

That distinction matters because exercises can be copied relatively easily. Understanding why they were created and how they are meant to be taught requires considerably more education.

The Importance of the Teacher

As demand for Pilates grows, so does demand for instructors.

That makes teacher education increasingly important, particularly as consumers encounter classes that may use the Pilates name while varying significantly in philosophy, structure and technique.

For Pace, preserving the method does not mean refusing to acknowledge change. It means ensuring that instructors understand the foundation before modifying or interpreting it.

Her perspective is informed not only by her own professional training but by generations of teachers.

Her grandmother, Romana Kryzanowska, studied directly with Joseph Pilates and became instrumental in continuing his teaching tradition. Pace's mother, Sari, was also raised within that environment.
