Be Your Own Hero!

Sovereignty

By Allison Clark

s a kid I didn’t spend

much time alone; I always

had someone to play

with, an activity to go to, a boy to chase, and later, a substance to distract me. I worked a lot, kept busy, and always had a guy on my mind.

This past 18 months has been different, though, as after two failed marriages in the past three years, I have heard these words play over and over in my head … “it’s not about the guy.

Prior to this time, it was “all about the guy.” Relationship drama was the point of life, or so I liked to believe. I still believe in love, but I have taken a step back from relationship - not exactly by choice - but by consistent blocks making it essential for me to “just do me” for a while.

I had a dream last night so vivid I knew it had to be shared …

I was a handmaiden to a princess, there to help her shine. For her, I tried on new gowns to see how they would suit her, practiced singing to help her improve, and did all these things to support her growth -- because she was the princess; therefore, she was important.

Soon another me that was watching this whole scene from afar noticed that me, the handmaiden self, in the process of supporting the princess, had become quite beautiful, quite an exceptional singer, quite extraordinary in my own right. Too extraordinary to be wasted!

Then I watched that self pull an Oracle card. The card was, “Death of the Soul” and my watching self called out in astonished horror, “Take her to the Queen! She must perform for the Queen!”

As women and mothers, we often feel compelled to put our own needs aside for the needs of others. All too often and after a decade or two, we can wake up to discover our once-strong sense of self has been given away in favor of the greater good of others.

Eventually we seek to reclaim this Strong Sense of Self, our Sovereignty.
