The Critic’s Choice, Emmys, and a few other organizations have recognized the “Unstructured Reality Show” with awards for series, like Alaska: The Last Frontier on Discovery Channel, that I love. While a finely crafted film garners more accolades, I appreciate this unscripted genre because it shares human mistakes as well as successful endeavors. I have learned how not to do some things as well as how to do them. The same film techniques such as cinematography, editing, and musical score that define an exceptional documentary movie, can also elevate a reality television series into the realm of art, like Life Below Zero on National Geographic Channel. Actually, there is not currently a definitive category for my viewing tastes in the 88th Academy Awards. So, I propose introducing an entirely new category. Namely, an “Instructional” genre award to recognize masterfully produced shows that are as entertaining as they are educational.
