I believe that the majority of humans learn through imitation. People can watch others demonstrating a skill like cooking and feel more confident about trying it themselves. Reality competition shows like the Emmy winning Chopped on Food Network have changed how people cook by using unusual food items. I certainly feel more experimental about growing my own produce and preparing meals as a result. I lament that the structured reality competition series Framework, on SpikeTV, lacks even an Oscar nod. I actually learned new furniture building techniques by watching that dynamic show. Offering recognition for success through awards programs further promotes film production with educational purposes.

I do hope that an “instructional” category will rise up and help shape a population striving towards more sustainable lifestyle choices. The success of award winning series like Shark Tank on ABC demonstrates that real people like me can be shown how to pursue entrepreneurial dreams. Perhaps we could even inspire viewing audiences to participate in government elections that actually impact our lives as avidly as voting for The Voice and America’s Got Talent contestants. I would also like to see One Square Mile: Texas on PBS expand their compelling format nationwide to facilitate the social empathy that builds strong communities. I confess that I would really enjoy seeing my favorite Naked and Afraid survivors wearing fashionable clothes on the red carpet to celebrate well deserved award nominations for their show. So until my preferred genres have their own Oscar category, I will keep hoping and just enjoy my guilty pleasures from the comfort of my country couch.
