TRIBUTE TO CITY CHARACTER
FESTIVE NEWS • DECEMBER 2018 • PAGE 29
In the early post-war years most Herefordians bought their radios and televisions from Kings Radio
in Widemarsh Street founded by Stanley Austin who died on February 1, aged 85. Born in Burnley,
Lancashire in 1932, Stan would become a leading Hereford businessman and community supporter.
His father, Robert set up the pioneering Radio Relay firm in Hereford in 1949, providing a cable
radio and rental service . In 1958, the early days of television Stan established his own firm, Kings
Radio selling and repairing television sets. He played a major role in the business and social life of
the city, He was a member of Lions Club and Rotary and was a Life Member of the Herefordshire
Golf Club. Five years ago health problems resulted in the loss of both his legs.
Simon Swancott of Lions Club, in a tribute to Stan said: “He will be remembered as one of the great
city characters of his generation, jovial and generous in his support for his family, friends and the wider
community.”
His family has left a legacy which will remind people of Stan. He bought a specially adapted car
so family members could take him out in his wheelchair. His nephew Andrew Prosser gave it to Lions
Club, which had been a big part of Stan’s life and it was passed on to Dial a Ride, the community
transport service whose own single wheelchair vehicle was beyond repair.
