DEMISE OF ADMAG
When John Priebe, a former compositor in the
Hereford Time printing workshop launched
Hereford Admag in the 70’s the general
manager of the Hereford Times announced to
staff the new rival wouldn’t last a couple of
months.
Forty years later and now owned by the same
company which owns the Hereford Times, the
ADMAG has finally closed down. In its hey-
day the paper, full of adverts only was delivered
free to homes around the county. It also
delivered 30,000 copies of Festive News each
November. John Priebe, who still lives in
Hereford and whose father was Polish and
worked in Bulmers Pectin plant sold up many
years ago. It would later become part of the
North Wales Media group itself recently
bought by Newsquest linking Admag to the
Hereford Times, its old rival for local
advertising money.
Hard times for newspapers
Said one media expert: “When the new
owners decided to stop the costly delivery of
Admag direct to the door leaving would be
readers to pick up a copy from local outlets its
fate was sealed. But it did survive a lot longer
than the Hereford Times boss predicated all
those years ago.
“Weekly print newspapers rely on advertising
and the advent of on-line news and advertising
is a real threat. Many have gone to the wall. But
the Hereford Times remains one of the best in
the country giving us a full round up of county
news and pictures. We should be grateful it is
