After years of decline Hereford’s Green Dragon Hotel is about to return to the days when it was the
venue for all the posh events – from banquets to balls – in a £3m project that will greatly improve
the city’s social scene.
When the 83 bedroom hotel on
Broad Street, a former centuries old
coaching inn owned by Trust House
Forte until Granada bought the com-
pany in a bitter take over and sold it
off to a private buyer who would
struggle for years to keep it open.
Now, a local consortium of busi-
ness men has taken over the hotel
and plans to refurbish the run-down
hotel to the high standard expected
of today’s hotels.. Many readers will
have memories of dancing at balls,
dining at banquets or being guests at
weddings. City clubs, Lions and
Round Table included held their meetings in one
of conference rooms followed by drinks in the
bar. Bulmers held their annual Golden Apple din-
ner for 200 cider apple growers. It all disappeared
over the years
Julian Vaughan , the new Managing Director
with experience of the hotel industry says the
Green Dragon will be returned to its former glory
when it was the centre of city social life. Here-
CHURCH BULLETIN BLOOMERS
Thank God for ladies with typewriters…. Their
efforts in church bulletins can often bring a touch
of humour to a Sunday morning service.
Here are a few examples picked up from
bulletins. None from Hereford, we quickly point
out.
Announcement for a national Prayers and
Fasting conference. The cost for those attending
includes meals.
The sermon this morning: ‘Jesus walks on the
water.’ The sermon tonight: ‘Searching for Jesus.’
Ladies, don’t forget the rummage sale. It’s a
chance to get rid of those things not worth
keeping around the house. Don’t forget your
husbands,
Don’t let worry kill you off – let the church
help.
For those who have children and don’t know it,
we have a nursery down stairs.

fordshire food and drink will top the menu in a
new Bistro and the one-time popular Offa Bar,
long demoted to a store room will become a cock-
tail bar. The ballroom in which so many will have
fond memories is getting a complete face-lift as
are the bedrooms.
The Green Dragon is the most impressive
building in the city centre and everyone should
be grateful that it is coming back to life. But it
will only succeed if the people support it.
