THE POPPY MAN
PAGE 42 • FESTIVE NEWS • DECEMBER 2015
This First World War commemoration project is
thought to be the first of its kind in the country.
The idea for a Poppy Man was created and
designed by Hereford in Bloom stalwart Angela
Pendleton. It features a hand crafted metal
sculpture of a man, covered in poppies sat on a
bench in front of the historic Old House in High
Town. The bench is one of a dozen purchased by
Hereford City Council and specially designed as
a World War 1 commemoration project. He is
facing a newly painted hoarding depicting the
gallant assault by the men of the Herefordshire
Regiment onto the beaches of Sulva Bay at the
start of the Gallipoli Campaign in August 1915.
Hundreds of visitors are taking ‘Selfies’ of
themselves sat on the bench alongside Poppy
Man and it is hoped the experience will make
them better aware of the sacrifices made for our
Freedom.
