Back in the early 70’s the only show in town was the Wiggin Pantomime group ‘s offering staged in the factory’s own auditorium
seating 750 and running for two weeks. It compared well with professional shows. One of the most memorable was ‘Ali Baba’ and , of
course the forty thieves and our picture from 40 years ago shows the robber chief George Thomas, dagger in hand facing up to Ali, the
Principal Boy, Jeanette Saunders, played as always in panto by a girl.
Hereford is preparing for its annual feast of panto fun Most
towns are lucky if they get to see just one of the traditional
stage shows, but here in the city families have a choice of three.
This year’s offering at The Courtyard is ‘Beauty and the
Beast’ whilch starts its run on November 27 to January 9 and
is expected to attract an audience totalling 20,000. Hereford
Amateur Pantomime Society has chosen the popular show,
Dick Whittington’ the story of a poor lad who, with his cat sets
off to seek fame and fortune in London and it runs at The
Courtyard from February 17 to 20 (half term week). The group
has been performing since 1984 and was created out of the old
Wiggin Pantomime which which first started doing the ‘It’s
Behind You’ routine in the mid sixties.
Finally, the Magna Theatre Company, will be performing
their contribution to the art of panto at Whitecross Academy.
The Magna Theatre Company, based in Credenhill will be
staging thew popul.ar Babes in the Wood panto at Whitecross
Academy, Hereford from February 18 to 20. Tickets
