BUSINESS FEATURE

Kamu Sauna

Authentic Finnish sauna culture balances simplicity in design, cultural tradition, community, and a connection to nature. Saunas offer purifying experiences that support the body, reduce stress and foster deep relaxation. Culturally, they serve as communal spaces where people connect, share conversations, and bond.
Bringing true Finnish sauna experiences to the East Kootenays are Juho and Becky Pelkonen who operate Ilomaa Forest Farm, a 40-acre off-grid property near Ta Ta Creek, where they forage and craft cultural delights from the bounty of the land. Growing up in Finland, Juho experienced sauna culture as a regular feature of daily living and has maintained his deep appreciation for the benefits of the sauna. He now builds custom saunas and has developed an extensive knowledge of all the resources needed to create in-home saunas and together with Becky, founded Kamu Sauna to bring sauna culture to entire communities.
In Fernie, Niamh Murphy first experienced a community sauna at a pop up event at Mantra Studio during Griz Days. A week later with plenty of time to think following knee surgery, she realised what a great fit this would be for
Fernie. She connected with Juho and Becky in April 2024 for what they refer to as a‘ vibe check’ – to make sure they had the same goals. Following the original 6-person sauna in Ta Ta Creek, they decided together to position a 10-person sauna in Fernie, which Juho constructed.
The mobile sauna is now available for rentals for groups, events, or just to have on hand at your vacation property to enjoy after a bike ride or hike. For 2025, the sauna will be available from May 22nd until the end of June and then again from September. A cold-plunge option is available with each rental, and community sauna sessions are offered periodically at a beautiful forest location on Dicken Road.
