Feeling The Sunshine | Page 31

Feeling the Sunshine, Spring 2020 An EHS Student Special Feature Publication away from everyone, to see a very bright lamp. It feels like the sun, so I close my eyes. I open them again and see I am at Smyth’s Ice Cream. I automatically know what this day is. This is the day that we found out that all our competitions were cancelled for Buzz because of the Coronavirus. Jacob, Chelsea, Megan, Isabela, and I left early, and we went to go get ice cream. We got our ice cream and sat outside but quickly left to go sit in Jacob’s car, it’s a wonder we all fit in there. “Jacob! I have no space! Move your seat!” I practically yell at him. “Everybody, look at the stars!” Jacob yells back and we all look up through his sunroof. “Ahhhh!” Isabela yells. “Noo!” Megan yells. “You guys are being real crazy right now,” Chelsea says to all of us. “You know it,” Isabela says. Then I start playing music as loud as I could, annoying everyone. After one song, Megan’s parents pull up and everyone gets out, except for Jacob. Even though the moon is out, I feel warm, so I close my eyes. “Jacob slow down!” I yell, opening my eyes. I am on Jacob’s back as he is running down the halls at Enfield High. Our FTC meeting just ended so we are all going home down. Jacob puts me down and we continue walking and Chelsea catches up. “Note to self, never let Jacob give you a piggyback ride, ever,” Chelsea says. “I saw my life flash before my eyes,” I say, still traumatized. “Like I would let you die,” Jacob says. “I can’t tell if you are joking or not,” I say and the three of us laugh. At this point we walk outside, and I close my eyes, feeling the sun. “Hannah!” Aiden says and I shoot my eyes open. “Were you dozing off again?” I see that we are in a room at Fermi, this was one of the many weeks we were in this room to help design a part of the robot that has barely been created. “Yeah, sorry,” I say. “I’m really tired, with all of this Buzz stuff.” “Me too, here, you can lay on my shoulder if you want.” “This is why you are one of my best friends.” I rest my head on Aiden’s shoulder as he is working on the very old computer, with me helping whenever I can. This room gets really warm, but it seems warmer today, so I slowly close my eyes. I open them to see I am in the woods. I frantically look around to see it’s my 26 year old self, and the memories aren’t happening anymore. I blink numerous times, trying to relive some memory, any memory. Nothing works. I check my phone. I’ve been out here for two hours. I stand up to head back to my parent’s home, which takes only a couple minutes. As I am walking back home, I get colder and colder, to temperatures that shouldn’t be possible in June. I hug myself as I get closer and closer to my childhood home.
