MANHASSET-LAKEVILLE
All Companies Go to Work
Story and Photos by Lee Genser
On Thursday, February 11th, at
10:44pm, Manhasset-Lakeville Fire
Department Companies 2 and 5
were dispatched to 45 Willets Pond
Path in North Hills for a reported
fire coming from the fireplace of a
home. Deputy Chiefs Kiess [8701],
Pisani [8702], and Stone [8705]
all began to respond and were advised by dispatch that he was now
receiving automatic alarms from the
two adjoining homes, and that Albertson Assistant Chief Jason Lasek
[801] was on scene reporting a
heavy smoke condition in the area as
well as coming from the home itself.
Deputy Chief Kiess arrived and transmitted a Signal 10 for a working fire
in the basement of the house. This
added Company 1, The Ambulance
Unit, and Rescue 8730 to the initial
alarm, along with the New Hyde Park
Fire Department as a FAST. Engine
8758 was the first engine to arrive
at the scene and stretched a 1 ¾ ‘’
hose line to the basement, while the
crew of Quint 8728 began to vent,
search the fire building, and conduct
searches of the adjoining homes on
the exposure sides. A total of three
lines were stretched, and two were
operated to extinguish the fire, which
extended to the first floor of the
home and caused the floor to partially collapse. Due to the extremely
cold temperatures and heavy volume of fire, all five Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Companies and the Ambulance Unit went to work, and the
Garden City Park Fire Department
was also called for an additional unit
to respond. The cause of the fire is
under investigation by the Nassau
County Fire Marshal’s Office, and all
units were released from the scene
by Deputy Chief Kiess by 2:00am.

In the cold, early morning hours of January 19th, the West
Hempstead Fire Department was dispatched to a reported garage fire at 444 Forest Place off of Linden Place. Responding fire department units were advised that multiple
calls were being received reporting the fire. Upon the arrival of Assistant Chief Mike Vogt [7601] a Signal 10 [working
fire] was transmitted for a fully involved detached garage
in close proximity to a residence. Firefighters immediately stretched lines to the rear yard, and despite heavy fire
with propane tanks located inside the garage, they were
able to make a good knockdown of the main body of fire.
Elmont Fire Department was designated the FAST for the
operation while Hempstead, Franklin Square, and Lakeview Fire Departments were among those notified for mutual aid. Due to the quick response time by firefighters,
extension to the home was kept to a minimum. All fire
department units were under the command of Chief Pete
Lilli [7600]. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
