Fire
and
Explosions
Story and Photos by T.J. Lambui
On Tuesday, September 13th, at approximately 0950 hours, numerous
calls to the 9-1-1 system reported a house fire on the southwest corner
of Merrick Road and Essex Circle in Shirley. The rear of the house was
fully engulfed upon arrival of Chief Thomas Connors [5-3-30]. At the
beginning of the fire at least one large explosion was heard and seen,
believed to have originated from a 100-pound propane cylinder that
BLEVE’d. Mutual aid was called in from numerous surrounding departments. No injuries were reported and the Fire Marshal’s Office was also
called to the scene for investigation. Most of the home was destroyed
and is considered a total loss.
