FDNY
343 Ride
Story and Photos by Kevin Madigan
Several years ago, to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the
9/11 attacks, members of the FDNY’s Engine 50, Ladder 19, and
Battalion 26 organized a bicycle ride from Montauk, New York to
Washington D.C. The ride totaled 343 miles, which was one mile
for each firefighter who died in the line of duty that fateful day. The
ride was also used as a fundraiser to assist the military men and
women who have given so much defending our great country. On
Wednesday, September 7th of this year, the riders began the first
leg of their 343-mile journey. The ride passed through Oceanside, where fire department members cheered them on, and then
stopped at Lynbrook Vulcan Engine Company 2. When the ride
got to the firehouse participants were able to rest, put their bicycles
into a provided FedEx truck, and take a bus into Manhattan before
getting themselves ready for the second day.
