The fashion industry may sound glamorous and at times it is but in reality, it is hard work and graft. To get to the top, you need to know people, you need be confident, and you need to know what you're doing. It's about getting that breakthrough moment or just simply finding your niche.
Recently the topic of careers within the fashion industry has been the hot topic of discussion. In a truthful conversation with over 200 students and a Facebook audience of thousands, it was discussed how the nature of work within the industry has changed hugely over the last few years. It's no longer just being a fashion designer or a buyer, technology has opened so many doors for new careers. Marketing is one of the most in demand jobs within the industry.

Those who enter the fashion industry don't usually stay with the same job for their whole career and that is the beauty of fashion. Being within the industry gives you the "capability and versatility" of being able to move and progress. One may start as a buyer but then move to merchandising and so on. It's all about being able to adapt.
In fashion there is no answer as to whether you need a degree or a fashion background. Should you complete an apprenticeship, or should you go to college? Phair, who studied philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford University, went on to launch TheOutnet.com in 2009. Certainly, for Phair, it was not a case of fashion knowledge but a case of business knowledge.
