Careers
What is your favourite part about being in a Fashion college?
"The students! The role of a teacher has expanded from just imparting knowledge, to being a counsellor, agony aunt, social worker, career's officer all wrapped up in one role. No two days are ever the same!
What is also great about teaching at the FRA as a Fashion college, is that every student embraces diversity. Regardless of where you live, your cultural differences, age, race, fashion preference… it doesn't matter. I have seen students form friendship groups that we describe as a 'dysfunctional family', but they just all get along which is wonderful to see."
Who is your biggest inspiration?
"My Mum. She migrated to England from Jamaica in the 70's when racism was still rife, and had to overcome so much to provide us with a good education and life aspirations. She obtained her degree in her 30's as a Mature student and carved a great career as a social worker, helping so many families through her work."
What recommendations/advice would you give to people wanting to enter in to the fashion industry?
"Do not be afraid to take a risk and be open to opportunity. The industry is competitive, whichever career path you choose, so be prepared to put yourself out there. Use tools such as LinkedIn to your advantage, contact companies even if they do not have a vacancy advertised, and ensure that your CV stands out form the crowd.".
