Masjid Selat Melaka
Malacca
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and travellers treat
Over the centuries, traders and invaders have left their mark on this quaint city-state with an architectural legacy of colourful shophouses, historic forts and religious buildings that dot the narrow streets of its historic quarter. Mix in a potpourri of cultures, colourful trishaws, chic galleries, traditional tea shops and a vibrant street life, and you have one captivating city to explore. Stand out sights south of the Melaka River include Dutch Square, Christ Church, the Stadthuys and the relic of the Portuguese fort A’ Famosa. North of the river is Chinatown, home to most of the city’ s hotels as well as temples, restaurants and Jalan Hang Jebat( formerly known as Jonker Walk), famed for its antiques and neon-lit night market held every Friday and Saturday. Its abundant stalls sell everything from tasty treats to souvenirs, while many of the ancient shophouses have been converted into enticing restaurants specialising in Peranakan cuisine, a blend of Chinese and Malay cooking that originated here.
