Taman Negara National Park
Peninsular Malaysia’ s number one natural treasure
Estimated at 130 million years old, Taman Negara is one of the world’ s oldest tropical rainforests and one of the largest protected areas in Southeast Asia. Sprawling across 1,677 square miles the park brims with towering trees, verdant jungle, fast-flowing rivers and sky-high peaks all of which provide a haven for a rich variety of wildlife, including rare mammals. While sightings of elephants, tigers and leopards are scarce, you’ ll be compensated by the song of insects and birds, tropical flora and, with luck, may well spy lizards, deer, snakes and even monkeys swinging between branches. For your own bird’ s eye view of the forest step out on the world’ s longest canopy walkway. At 147 feet high and 1,673 feet long, this suspended rope bridge is a must do! If you prefer to keep your feet firmly on the ground, join a guided trek along the marked trails. You can also opt to explore spectacular caverns, seek out wildlife during a river cruise or visit the Orang Asil people for a fascinating glimpse of their nomadic lifestyle.
Mutiara Resort
3H Tanah Rata
Perched above the junction of the Tembeling and Tahan Rivers, the Mutiara is the park’ s only resort. To ensure minimal damage to this special ecosystem, the property is dimly lit to avoid scaring wildlife, everything used is biodegradable and all the wooden chalet interiors are made of natural produce. Facilities include a restaurant, bar and free WiFi.
Getting there: The journey by road takes around 3 hours from Kuala Lumpur.
Best time to go: Taman Negara has a hot and humid climate with an abundance of sunshine year round. Daytime temperatures range between 26-35 º C while at night it’ s 24-29 º C. From mid-November until February the monsoon season often brings rain, usually in the late afternoon or evening.
