The second theme, “Writers live the writing” was unexpected. The participant responsible for this wording elaborated, saying, “They live the writing. They write every day!” This theme represents the many positive and negative descriptions of student feelings towards writing experiences. Students learned that writing is not always easy, and writers must “live the writing” by pushing through challenges and growing every day. The subtheme “Writers never give up” represents student understanding that writers persevere and work often to improve. Conversely, the subtheme “I get stuck” stands for student experiences struggling with the writing process, making mistakes, and the resulting negative feelings. Once again, while 12 and 11 responses provided evidence for these subthemes, respectively, examples are displayed in Table 2.
