According to the article " Japan Surrenders Bringing End to WWII " on History . com , General Douglas MacArthur spoke these words on September 2 , 1945 .
One simple sentence spoken by MacArthur was what the world had waited for since 1939 . These words , spoken around eight o ? clock p . m ., rang through the world announcing the end of the devastating , catastrophic World War II .
The Japanese Instrument of Surrender was signed . One of the most important signatures was of the Commander of the Allies , MacArthur , but it included those of France , Germany , Japan , and England . The document was a written draft of the agreement between Japan and the rest of the Allied nations , formalizing the end of the war .
U . S . President Harry S . Truman and the American War Departments had drawn up this historic draft .
According to History . com ,' s article " Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki " on August 6 , nearly a month earlier , the devastating atomic bomb named ? Little Boy ? was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima . Three days later , another atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki , Japan . The bombs were the first of their kind and the last to be used in war , but their impact was apparent .
Finally , after six long , bloody years of war , Japan surrendered , Berlin was occupied by the Allies , and the troops were going home .
