By Kyle S . I bet you never thought people would have worms in their house and try to keep them there , but they do . Welcome to the world of vermi-composting .
As the weather cools down , everyone is probably looking for fun new indoor projects . Pollution and waste are serious problems in our world and having a vermi-composting bin can really help to minimize the waste and maximize the benefits . Vermi-composting is a way for people to turn their useless food scraps into usable soil for their potted plants and gardens . Another surprising fact is that a worm bin will never smell . I bet you are wondering , ? Well , how do I get started ??. There are a number of ways , and I will try to cover them all .
The easiest way to get started is to purchase a worm bin . There are a number of good worm bins out there that make getting your soil quick and easy , but if the price makes you want to hit the dirt you ' re trying to make , there is another way to acquire your worm ? s home by building it with totes . These homemade bins are much harder to work with when it comes to harvesting your compost , though . If you are just getting started , I would suggest getting a starter kit , many of which can be purchased for under $ 100 .
The next step to becoming a worm farmer is acquiring soil and worms . Almost any soil would work depending on what compost you want . Now at this point , you have your soil and bin . The only thing missing is the worms . You could get worms from your yard , but the best option for a composter is the famous red wiggler composting worms . The easiest way to acquire worms would be to purchase them by the pound on the internet or at a store . Your worms will come a little dried out in a fabric bag , so make sure to transfer them as soon as they arrive . Also , keep in mind that each of your new worms can consume half their weight in food every day .
The next step is to add the worms to your bin that is already filled with the dirt of your choice . Next , fill the tray with food scraps and shredded paper and mix it with the dirt . Finally , wet a piece of paper and lay it over the top of the soil and worms .
Congratulations , your worms are started and just need to adjust to their new home . Go get out there and make plants grow , limit pollution , and help the Earth , all while having fun new pets in your house .
