SHS Honors Two Gifted Leaders
Announcing the Sr. Carol A. Haggarty, RSCJ ASH’ 59 Leadership Award
Sacred Heart is pleased to announce the establishment of the Sr. Carol A. Haggarty, RSCJ ASH’ 59 Leadership Award. The award will honor an RSCJ, a Sheridan Road alumna or alumnus, or a past Sacred Heart Schools faculty or staff member who best exemplifies the leadership and commitment to Sacred Heart
Recipient Sr. Sheila Hammond, education demonstrated by

Sr. Haggarty. An alumna of the of the Sheridan Road Academy, Sr. Haggarty served Sacred Heart Schools as a faculty member, principal of the Academy and a member of the Board of Trustees. She also was head of schools at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, a member of the RSCJ provincial team, and served at the national office of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools. When celebrating her 50th Jubilee, Sr. Haggarty said,“ I have a commitment to the Society because I’ ve taken vows, yes, but also because of my relationship with God. How do we glorify God in daily life? In the Society, we help each other down the path to holiness.”
Recipients of the Sr. Carol Haggarty, RSCJ ASH’ 59 Leadership Award embody the call from St. John’ s Gospel— beloved by Sr. Haggarty— to“ love one another as I have loved you” by providing leadership that propels Sacred Heart education into the future.
The first recipient of the award will be Sr. Sheila Hammond, RSCJ ASH’ 61. Sr. Hammond will receive the award at the Alumni Weekend Reunion Liturgy on October 22, 2017.
Sr. Hammond attended Sacred Hearts Schools from first grade through high school, graduating in 1961. She took her first vows as a Religious of the Sacred Heart in 1968 and was assigned a teaching position at Sacred Heart Schools. She taught English, French and religion, and coached volleyball for six years. Sr. Hammond served on the Sacred Heart Schools Board of Trustees from 1980-81 and from 1999-2005.
Sr. Hammond is currently the Provincial for the United States – Canada( USC) Province of the Society of the Sacred Heart. She joined the provincial leadership team in October 2016 after seven years as the director of pastoral care at Saint Louis University Hospital. Her previous roles have included director of chaplaincy services at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, director of formation for the U. S. Province and chaplain for hospitals in Detroit and Lansing, Mich. Her graduate degree in theology is from St. Louis University and her bachelor’ s degree is from Manhattanville College. Sr. Hammond is a certified clinical pastoral education( CPE) supervisor.

Megan ASH’ 67 will be presented following the Alumni Weekend Reunion Liturgy on October 22.
This year’ s award recipient is Kathleen Hackett Megan ASH’ 67. Kathleen is an active volunteer and leader in several charitable organizations in South Florida, including Episcopal Charities of South Florida, St. Paul’ s Episcopal Church Annual Sale, Paul’ s Place After School Program, Caring Kitchen, and Family Promise of South Palm Beach County. She is a volunteer tutor, cook, driver, nursing home lay Eucharistic visitor and social services program advocate. Kathleen volunteers regularly throughout the year and supervises nearly 90 volunteers at her church’ s annual sale, which raises funds to assist thousands of people in need, both locally and internationally. When Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, she traveled there to assist in the rebuilding
