Fall 2017: Heartbeat and Annual Report Fall17 Heartbeat | Page 16

Hunter: I have always valued Goal II: educating to a deep respect for intellectual values. At Sacred Heart, we were taught to value knowledge and learning, and I believe that is something that helps to drive you forward. Through Goal II you respect the process of learning and all that comes with it. In high school, that meant continuing conversations after class ended— both with my teachers and with my peers as well. I don’ t think it means that you have an answer for everything, but that you are asking the questions that need to be asked. Questions such as: What can I do to learn more? What can I connect to other areas of study? How can I gain real-world experience?
Q: What would you like to tell the Class of 2018 that you wish someone had told you?
Hunter: Work to figure out who you are and take pride in your individuality. It’ s a process that takes a lifetime, but at times it becomes easy to fit into another person’ s mold. After potentially being in one school for nine years, high school is an opportunity to meet new people. So put yourself out there. Don’ t be shy. Everybody else is looking to make friends too, so be yourself and you will make friends that truly accept you for who you are.
Jack: Transition and a newfound sense of freedom can be overwhelming and lead some kids to not be true to themselves and their values. Making big decisions that will benefit you and your development are important. Learn from your mistakes and acknowledge that you will make mistakes, both big and small. The most important thing is how you bounce back from them and get back on the right track.
Olivia: I would reassure them that they really are prepared, more prepared than they realize. You will be scared on your first day of high school but you have to tell yourself that you’ re ready. If I knew and believed how ready I actually was, I would have had a much smoother transition. I would also tell them to remember their roots and to enjoy themselves. Know who you are. You will be faced with a lot of choices during high school. A lot of times, you will make the right choice, but not always. Remember the Goals and the foundation that you have and take advantage of your opportunities. The time goes by so fast.
