One of my big takeaways from com- munity service is that you really have to put yourself into it instead of simply going through the motions. True service is interacting, learning people’s stories and making relation- ships. There are many ways that you can give, but I believe that it is not nearly as fulfilling unless you are able to learn from the people that you are serving. Olivia: Sacred Heart really instills service in you, sometimes in ways that you don’t even realize. I remember back in 2nd grade being so eager to participate in Children of the eye-opening. Interacting with the people that you are serving was rewarding, particularly there, where you are dealing with children who may not have a lot of the things that we had growing up. It is certainly a very sobering experience— not just for me but for a lot of Sacred Heart students. It was an awakening for me, and it was jarring to see the disparity between rich and poor. That reinforced what Sacred Heart teaches about giving without the expectation of getting something tangible in return. Q: Every Sacred Heart student is well familiar with the Five Goals.
