Behind the Door
It’s difficult to believe that some can spend more than four years in a school building and still not know all of the people who grace its halls. The goal of the Behind the Door series is for our readers and students to learn more about those human beings who assist in the development of children in their day-to-day lives. Through artful and meaningful interviews, we tell their stories.

What was the first thing that you created (as an artist) that you were proud of?
Oh, yeah,I can remember as a little kid, and I would have been really, really young. My mother obviously gave me paper and things to draw an eye. I must have been maybe two or three. And I was able to draw the number four… So then I just continued drawing things. And I got encouragement from my parents. So you're a proper little artist, that kind of thing. And I guess I thought that one day that was, you know, destined for me was to become an artist. So from a very early age, I always thought I would do something creative. So that moment really stuck with me, I can still remember it today. And we're talking easily from the house I was living in when this happened, it would easily have been about 1968-1969, I would have been a real little kid, maybe three or four years of age.
How do you feel like your experiences as a student affect the way that you teach as a teacher?
I didn't like my high school art classes. So I always, although I never expected to become a teacher, I wanted to become a sculptor. It just didn't happen that way. Late after college, I got some experience that moved me towards education.
