Nit de Foc
Midsummer in Spain is celebrated with the festival of Sant Joan (St John the Baptist) and the Nit de Foc (Night of Fire). In Mallorca, the main festivities are held in Palma and - to the backdrop of the illuminated cathedral - wild, fire-toting devils dance through the crowds in a swirl of flames, as fireworks fill the night sky. According to tradition, if people jump over the flames three times they will be cleansed and purified of their problems. Die Sommersonnenwende wird in Spanien mit dem Fest von Sant Joan (Johannes der Täufer) und der Nit de Foc (Nacht des Feuers) gefeiert. In Mallorca werden die Hauptfeierlichkeiten in Palma ausgetragen. Vor der angestrahlten Kathedrale tanzen wilde, Funken sprühende Teufel in einem Strudel aus Flammen durch die Menschenmenge, während Feuerwerkskörper den Nachthimmel beleuchten. Laut Tradition werden diejenigen, die drei Mal über die Flammen springen, geläutert und von ihren Problemen befreit.
