At its core, NEWSUBSTANCE is built around two complementary teams: Imagine & Design and Build & Perform. Concepts are developed with ambition from the outset, then carried through into technical design, fabrication and delivery. These teams work side by side from day one, testing ideas, solving challenges and ensuring what is imagined can be realised exactly as intended.
This integrated approach allows the studio to operate flexibly across a project’ s lifecycle, whether leading creatively, collaborating as consultants or delivering as fabricators. It’ s a model that has enabled NEWSUBSTANCE to contribute to global projects in a wide range of roles and contexts.
The studio’ s work sits across two core areas: Moments and Spaces.
Moments exist in time rather than place. These are live experiences such as performances, ceremonies and cultural events, where energy, storytelling and spectacle come together in front of an audience.
The studio’ s work with artists such as Doja Cat highlights how physical design can elevate performance. For the Scarlet Tour, NEWSUBSTANCE created striking stage elements including a giant eyeball and a towering spider, designed to tour and perform seamlessly. As noted by the Grammys, these immense, mysterious props became defining features of
