The studio’ s Location Based Entertainment work extends these moments in time into something more permanent. The studio builds worlds- drawing on IPs, narrative, history and culture, NEWSUBSTANCE creates immersive, physical narratives that audiences can step inside and experience for themselves. Working across permanent and temporary immersive installations, live shows, branded environments, and cultural experiences, the studio combines storytelling, spatial and scenic design, media, and production to create immersive worlds that are emotionally engaging, visually distinctive, operationally and commercially deliverable. Whether developing a major IP-led attraction, a large-scale public installation for a music tour, or a one-night-only immersive spectacle, NEWSUBSTANCE creates memorable, high-impact experiences that engage audiences, encourage interaction, and leave a lasting impression.
Spaces, by contrast, are artistic interventions. Icons, installations and environments that transform how people experience a place. From pavilions and iconic landmarks to large-scale placemaking, these projects are designed to resonate emotionally and visually, capturing attention and creating lasting connections and a sense of place.
SEE MONSTER is a defining example. A decommissioned North Sea oil rig was transformed into a bold public artwork as part of UNBOXED, a UK-wide celebration of creativity. Selected from over 300 proposals, NEWSUBSTANCE delivered one of the programme’ s most ambitious commissions. Through installation, performance, planting and renewable technologies, SEE MONSTER became a place to explore, reflect and engage. It sparked conversations around reuse, sustainability and the future of energy, welcoming over half a million visitors in just nine weeks.
Another standout project is Spectra at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The tower reimagines how the festival can be experienced, elevating visitors above the landscape through a shifting spectrum of colour. Over time, Spectra has become an icon of the festival, alongside the ferris wheel, palm trees and world-renowned stage designs. Spectra appears across festival merchandise, even including a Christmas bauble in 2025, and in wider pop culture such as Family Guy and Fortnite.
These projects are great examples of how NEWSUBSTANCE’ s Spaces work brings people together, creating shared experiences that are both physical and meaningful and are rooted in narrative. Looking ahead, the studio continues to push this work further, with new projects set to expand the scale and ambition of its spatial offering.
Across both Spaces and Moments, collaboration is central. Creative, technical and production expertise are brought together early, working in close partnership with clients to develop ideas with clarity, flexibility and intent.
As audience expectations around live and shared experiences continue to evolve, there is an increasing demand for work that feels tangible, collective and real. By staying rooted in the physical while embracing technology, NEWSUBSTANCE continues to create experiences that draw people in, bring them together and stay with them long after the moment has passed.
