EverythingLocal spent some time with Michelle Petersen and spoke to her about the soup kitchen she runs from her house in Northpine.
Hello Michelle, thanks for taking the time to chat to us, please will you tell us more about the soup kitchen and what made you decide to get it going?
We opened the soup kitchen on 21 st June 2014. Prior to that, my husband and I were contemplating and had a long debate about this. We discussed it with our kids, they were elated knowing that they too can help make a difference in at least one persons life by feeding them. With winter that was fast approaching, we decided to just get up and go ahead with our plan.
AS your soup kitchen is a non profit organisation, how has the support been?
In all honestly, the support hasn’ t been what we expected it to be, but also, we are not looking for charity so we’ re more than happy to fork out ourselves. There are a few ladies who have been donating on a regular basis and we’ re eternally grateful to them.
On average how many families do you feed at a time?
On average we serve over 50 people( from Scottsdene, Wallacedene & Bloekombos), every Saturday.
Where does the soup kitchen operate from and how often do you serve meals to the less fortunate?
The kitchen is run from our home & serve every Saturday
