No excuse is ever needed for a visit to Florence but it is a wonderful place to visit in the winter. It is so easy to get around and everything is within walking distance from the hotels we use in the city centre. The city is obviously a delight for Christmas shopping from designer clothes to locally-made leather goods, from handmade paper and stationery items to jewellery and perfume. In Florence there is the Christmas market in the square outside Santa Croce and the Green Line Festival of lights that illuminates the Ponte Vecchio and other buildings taking place from 8 December to 9 January. Combine this with visits to your favourite museums and galleries, followed by a dinner in a cosy trattoria serving hearty Tuscan specialities.
