In this session, teachers will have the opportunity to integrate instructional strategies, practices, and skills to continue to build rigor in our current curriculum and assessments. Teachers will also have the opportunity to share and create standards-based instructional activities that promote student engagement and increase achievement. We will discuss the connections between standards-based curriculum, assessment, and instruction and how they impact student achievement.
Session 17- 6-8 Math Teachers Integrating Research-Based Mathematics Instructional Strategies Mike Pescitelli Location: JFK 19 WHITE
In this session, teachers will have the opportunity to integrate instructional strategies, practices, and skills to continue to build rigor in our current curriculum and assessments. In this session, middle school ELA and social studies teachers will explore ways to take Shared Inquiry learning in their classrooms to the next level. Teachers will share concerns, questions, and practical challenges they face and discover ways to support all students in higher-level reading and discussion. The presenter will briefly review and model inquiry questioning and will be ready to share tools for helping students develop questions for extending inquiry discussions into research or writing, for assessing student learning, and / or for developing“ text sets” depending on teachers’ needs.

Six Bricks is a hands-on tool for learning using LEGO R DUPLO bricks. Students can practice memory skills, movement, creativity, and more. Participants receive a class set of Six Bricks and through play, will learn several activities that can be used with children in the classroom the next day. Activities are easily adapted to match students’ skills and interests, and best of all, the activities are FUN! Teachers will also explore the theory of playful learning.

Session 21— K-5 Zooming in on Elementary Literacy and Social Studies Integration Jennifer Murrihy Location: JFK 25 WHITE
In this interactive, hands-on session, teachers in Grades K-5 will explore strategies to connect social studies content and English language arts. Through experiential inquiry, teachers will increase their awareness of strategies for preparing students to ask questions, tackle complex texts, and explore primary sources which correlate to existing units.

If you agree that it’ s the time of year when we need a change to our everyday routines, this is the workshop for you! Come get some new, hands-on literacy center ideas you can use with your students right away! Attendees will collect literacy center favorites from their colleagues, as well as share one of their own. Teachers will have the opportunity to explore a variety of iPad applications that support foundational literacy skills. Part of the workshop will be in a makeand-take format so no one will leave empty-handed. Please remember to bring a copy of your favorite literacy center to share with your primary level colleagues.

Student Engagement Andy Longey & Connell Clark Location: EHS E330
What better way to learn about student engagement than through some of our students! EHS students who are members of the CT Association of Schools Council will lead middle school teachers on a tour of the new building and then participate in a discussion about what teaching strategies engage them in class and school.
