Visual Art and STEAM Departments From Trash to Treasure - Putting the " A " in STEAM
Drew Alexander , a sixth-grade student created “ Future Structure ”, an original found object sculpture made from 3D printer waste materials . Drew said , “ I ’ m always building things like treehouses and forts out of scrap wood and materials I find . I enjoy making things , it ’ s calming and relaxing for me .” Drew aspires to one day become an Aerospace Engineer .
Students in Introduction to CAD ( Computer Aided Drafting ) and Basic Electronics use Fusion 360 to create 3D designs . When designs are printed , they are printed on a " raft " or may need support pieces , which ultimately become garbage .
Adam Mitchell from the STEAM Department has been collaborating with Jen Young from the Visual Arts Department to find unique and innovative ways to expand student learning .
Physical Education / Health Department Dancing into Creativity : JFK PE Gets Groovy !
Our JFK Grade 6 Physical Education classes shake things up with an exciting Creative Dance Unit . This unique and engaging experience had students moving to the rhythm , exploring their creativity , and learning a vital lesson : the power of collaboration .
In our latest adventure in PE , we ' re diving into the world of creative dance . This unit isn ' t just about busting some moves but learning to express yourself through your body while having a blast . From jazz to hip-hop , contemporary to freestyle , students explored various dance styles , experimented with choreography , and got their groove on . Students needed no previous dance experience ; this unit was about discovering your inner dancer and having fun !
One of the most exciting aspects of this dance unit is the opportunity for students to use technology to learn and create choreography and to collaborate with their fellow students in small groups . Here ' s why working together is a game-changer . Dancing together isn ' t just about mirroring each other ' s moves ; it ' s about creating something unique and beautiful as a team . Through collaboration , students learn to trust their peers , communicate effectively , and appreciate the value of everyone ' s contributions . The creative possibilities are endless when you combine different ideas , backgrounds , and styles .
