WHAT’S THE BUZZ AT ESS!
Second Grade Superheroes
Mrs. Fitzgerald, Mrs. Kilty, Mrs. Schmidt,
Mrs. Tercasio & Mrs. Trifone
The second graders have been busy
reading nonfiction texts! Our focus
has been on the various parts that
make up an informational text, such
as the table of contents, section
headings, diagrams with labels,
glossaries and the index. The children
have come to see that by recognizing
and utilizing these various parts of an
informational text they can more
easily determine the book’s topic,
main ideas and details. In addition,
students have learned that reading
multiple books on a topic can help to
make them “experts” on it, by
allowing them to synthesize their
knowledge across texts. For our
celebration, they shared a favorite
book with grade level peers.
In correlation with our reading unit,
we have written our own
informational books as well. Students
have been writing “All-About” books
on different topics to teach an
audience. They enjoyed sharing this
writing with others around the school!
In math, we are wrapping up our unit
about adding and subtracting two and
three-digit numbers. Next, we will
learn about linear measurement and
geometry. In science, we will study a
unit on habitats. The kids will have a
wonderful time learning about
different animals and the
environments in which they live. In
social studies, we are studying black
history and several winter holidays.
LEGO learning is always a fun part of
the week. The children enjoy learning
with the LEGO bricks.
