We were sent to the Las Animas Grill to
check in to our room by our local host and
good friend Erminia Velarde. The scent of
fresh mountain air, marijuana and tacos de
carnitas followed us up the narrow staircase
as the owner, Jay, escorted us to our room
above the bar and grill. The rooms are com-
plete with a queen sized bed, futon couch,
digital TV., standard bathroom and a full
kitchen.
After settling in we went for a stroll through
the streets as we photographed the worn
and reconstructed structures such as Jaffa
Opera House, Carnegie Public Library, City
Hall, the Temple Aaron, the oldest continu-
ously active Synagogue in the state and the
Holy Trinity Catholic Church, near the center
of the City, is the oldest Catholic church in
the area, having been constructed in 1886.
