68 Employability Week: Programme of Events Kent Union – HR Department Kent Union – Volunteering Language Express www.kentunion.co.uk/eandv www.kentunion.co.uk/jobs Volunteering is a great way to gain hands-on experience and meet new people whilst giving back to the local and campus communities and developing your employability skills. Currently there are a number of volunteering opportunities available for students to get involved with, including Volunteering Societies, one-off opportunities and local charities. www.kent.ac.uk/languageexpress Kent Union is the voice of all students at the University of Kent; we represent our members to the University, the communities in which they live and to wider society through our membership of the national student movement. Kent Union is a successful, vibrant and exciting organisation, we have achieved a great deal in the last few years, more than doubling in size to our current £11million turnover, 600 employees and 2,000+ volunteers. We have 350 students working for us mainly within our Licenced Trade and Retail Departments. The start of the Recruitment process for these roles mainly takes place in January at our two ‘Recruitment Days’. Kent Union – Student Advice Centre www.kentunion.co.uk/advice or advice@kent.ac.uk The student advice centre is a free, confidential and impartial advice service run by Kent Union for all students of the University of Kent. We can offer you help with any problems you may experience which affect your studies. The main areas we cover are money and funding, housing, immigration and visas, but we can also check your right to work in the UK, review your employment contract, advise you how to obtain a national insurance number or a tax refund and much more! Our Toolkit can help connect you with these opportunities and gives you a place to quickly and simply record all your extracurricular activities and log your volunteering hours, whether it be volunteering on a committee, helping out with charity events or taking part in an organised litter pick – all of which can count towards your Kent Student Certificate for Volunteering (KSCV). KEW-NET Mentoring www.kent.ac.uk/ces/student/ kew-net.html Our online mentoring network links currents students and recent graduates with professionals who are willing to share advice, give career insights or offer work experience. Sign up today to get an insight into the sector of work you’re interested in! Develop your international communication skills and enhance your employability with our easyaccess language courses. Choose from: Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. All courses run for 10 weeks in the autumn term and 10 weeks in the spring term. Classes are taught in the evenings so you can fit them around your timetable. Learning and Development www.kent.ac.uk/hrlearninganddevelopment When an organisation gets the best out of its people and combines their skills and capabilities, it boosts its performance. What’s more, it helps those individuals discover their own strengths and potential. It adds up to a rewarding role for learning and development (L&D) professionals. As an L&D specialist, you could be delivering firearms training for police officers or development programmes for fund managers. Or you could be supporting managers who are acting as coaches and mentors. L&D professionals help organisations implement strategy by aligning learning with business priorities. You’ll need to be able to think on your feet and you’ll benefit from having strong analytical skills.
