Today’s
visitors
Tavistock
Tavistock are stronger than last year
having signed some experienced players
to bolster key positions.
Having only lost
Ben Davies from last
season’s squad the Lambs
have been bolstered by the signings of St
Blazey centre half Joe Smith, Harry Eaton
(Vospers), Will Davis (Liskeard), and Chris
Bray (Bere Alston).
Ryan Honey makes a welcome return and
will be joined in the squad by a number of
talented local youngsters.
They now also have a highly talented
group of local youngsters coming through
who look as though they are going to be
very special, and when they are mixed in
with the existing squad things are looking
very rosy. The club are really excited
about their prospects for this season.
Long serving goalkeeper Andy Meeds has
not recovered from breaking his ribs at
the end of last season so Adam Fuller
(Barnstaple Town) and Dean Smith,
returning after a lengthy lay off, will be
vying for the number one spot.
John Wyatt (groin), Paul Quinn (Army) and
Dean Southcott (RAF) will be the only
absentees for the Lambs who named a
21-man squad for last Saturday’s opener
against last season’s Division One East
Champions, Exmouth Town.
The history of football In Tavistock
Eventually there were at least three other clubs in
the town, Tavistock Comrades, Bannawell Blues
United and Tavistock West End. Amalgamation in
1939 produced the familiar colours of red and black.
A welcome change to the salmon pink shirts with
chocolate collars and cuffs of 1919.
The club was founded on September 8th, 1888 – the
foundation year of the Devon County FA – when
sportsman and businessman Herbert Spencer
summoned “interested persons to assemble at the
Guildhall where a committee was elected under the
chairmanship of his brother, Wilfred, with Herbert as
his deputy and another brother, Kingsley, on the
committee with Tom Owen Esq as secretary.
The years 1920 to 1930 were successful times with
excellent results in the league, Bedford Cup and
Senior Devon Cup.
