the play. The song is supposed to feature the selected idioms and the
lyrics will be uploaded on the class padlet.
Final (8 minutes)
The teacher assesses and comments the performances.
6th lesson:
Reflection on the importance of idioms in culture. Written
production (computer room)
Introduction (5 minutes)
The teacher connects with the Web site
http://robslink.com/SAS/democd93/worldwide_idioms.htm and shows
the students a work done by a researcher who searched the web for
interesting idioms from other countries, especially those that were in a
different language, translated directly/literally into English, and then had
an explanation of what the expression actually meant.
The teacher invites the students to reflect on the common cross-
cultural aspects of idiomatic expressions (a phenomenon observed in
every language).
The teacher summarises on the blackboard by means of a
concept map the feedback from the students.
Development (40 minutes)
The teacher hands out an adapted article about the relation
between idioms and culture and their importance in conveying the
cultural values of a community.
(Jigsaw reading) Students are asked to break down in groups of
three (max four people). Each group will read a part of the test and be
experts in their part. Students will be asked to answer some
comprehension questions.
The worksheet will feature also questions regarding the other
excerpts from the text, dealt with by the other groups’ members.
Each student from each “home group” is supposed to meet with
the members from the other groups in order to collect the necessary
information, and after mastering the material, return to the "home"
group and teach the material to their group members.
Using the answers collected, every group will write a short
summary of the main aspects addressed by the article.
Every member of the group will be given a task. Two members
will focus on summarising the main points, one member will be in
charge of the spelling check and there will be a member in charge of
grammar accuracy.
The summaries will be uploaded on the class shared padlet
together with images and captions associated to the idioms previously
