End of Life
California joined four other states
in legalizing assisted suicide.
Earlier this month, Gov. Jerry Brown
signed the End of Life Option Act,
allowing physicians to prescribe a
lethal cocktail of medication to end
a terminally ill patient’s life. For approval, the person must be over 18,
mentally competent and expected
to die within six months. Endorsement from two separate physicians
is required and the medicine must
be self-administered.
“In the end I was left to reflect on
what I would want in the face of
my own death. I do not know what
I would do if I was dying,” Brown
said, after signing the controversial
bill into law. “I am certain, however,
that it would be a comfort to be able
to consider the options afforded by
this bill. And I wouldn’t deny that
right to others.”
California patterned its version after Oregon, the first state to legalize
assisted suicide. State legislators
approved the bill in September but
it won’t be in effect until sometime
next year. / NASHE HARLEY
