MORENO PLACES
SIXTH IN THE STATE
After a disappointing
performance in the SoCal
Regionals, sophomore hurdler
Octavio Moreno returned to form,
placing sixth in the 400-meter
hurdles at California Community
College Athletic Association state
finals at the College of San Mateo.
Moreno holds the second-best
record for the 400-meter hurdles
in Santa Ana College history with
a time of 53.56.
“It was rewarding coming back
from my performance in regionals.
I did pretty bad in prelims and
finals so doing better at state
lifted me up,” Moreno said.
Santa Ana Track and Field head
coach Miriam Mitzel was not
surprised that Moreno finished the
season on a high note. Mitzel was
proud that Moreno was able to
perform so well.
“He wanted it, and he is [Octavio]
is one of those kids that is here
to train. He takes care of himself.
He wanted it, and that is one thing
that’s hard to coach. You can
coach a kid, but you cannot show
someone how to want it,” Mitzel
said.
“This is my last chance to
represent the school and the
conference and just tell my story,”
Moreno said. Additional reporting

GOLF CLASSIC: Event raises $100,000 for SAC student athletes
Santa Ana College Kinesiology and Athletic
department raised $100,000 through the Santa
Ana College Ed Arnold Golf Classic, which gives
scholarships to sophomore student-athletes.
Recipients of the scholarships earned a GPA
above 3.0 and must be transferring to a four-year
college.
The Ed Arnold Golf Classic is one of the largest
fundraisers at SAC. The funds go to benefit the
Santa Ana College Athletic Program, the Athletic
Hall of Fame and Student-Athlete Scholarships.
“This is the largest revenue that’s ever been
raised through this event,” Santa Ana College
Athletic Director Mary Hegarty said.
Student-athletes were chosen by members of
the Hall of Fame Committee, the athletic director
and counselors.
“The foundation staff put in a tremendous
amount of work along with our athletic department
and Hall of Fame Committee to conduct the
golf tournament, along with businesses and
individual golfers to contribute to this. It says a
lot about our college, and it says that we value
our student-athletes and we value their efforts,”
Hegarty said.
In the past, the Ed Arnold classic awarded eight
scholarships, but this year, the committee was able
to honor more students who achieved success not
only in academics but also in athletics.
“I feel very blessed and thankful that I got
recognized for my achievements in sports and
academic accomplishments,” track and field
sprinter Alexandria Owens said.
Owen plans to continue her academic and
athletic career at California State University of
San Bernardino, where she plans on majoring in
psychology.
Wrestler Fuentes-Norikiyo plans to continue his
academic and athletic career at San Francisco
State University where he will be majoring in
Business Management.
“I feel thrilled that I received this scholarship.
I didn’t expect to get this award. I was trying to
survive the semester and season, so I just worked
hard in wrestling and school,” said wrestler John
Fuentes-Norikiyo said.
Ten student-athletes were chosen for the
scholarship; Nicole Yniguez (Softball), Alexandria
Owens (Track & Field), Josh Fuentes-Norikiyo
(Wrestling), Sally Morris (Women’s Basketball),
Brianna Ceballos (Women’s Soccer), Lisbeth
Romero (Women’s Soccer), Stephanie Duarte
(Women’s Soccer), Sam Warren (Football), Dan
Niculescu (Football), Sam Soto (Football).
