Key elements of Leadership of a #DSL #DigitalSecLeader

It is already said that this is the year of the Digital Security Leader (#LSD) as highlighted by his question Terry Ray in his article, Is 2019
the Year of the CISO? , in his article they expose some of the key nuances of the tensions that exist between the CIO (Leader of
Information Technologies) and the #LSD. Especially highlighting your final sentence. “The Digital Security Leader #DSL, addresses risk
issues and risk assessments much more complex than IT Leaders, to the point that their work is about risks and in a way and only
accidentally deals with IT issues and Not the other way around. This is how the #DSL is a digitally present risk manager.”
Thus, the author highlights the importance of #DSL in today's organizations, and its value as a specialist who has taken relevant positions
because of the moments of digital attachment in which companies are. This leads us to think about what are those key elements of
Leadership that position should have. In this regard, by reviewing the article “ This Study of 300,000 Leaders Revealed the Top 10 Traits
for Success ” by Peter Economy, who is reviewing a recent study on leadership in which there are some fundamental characteristics that
every Leader must have and that are fully applicable to Digital Security Leaders as a new compendium of capabilities to explore.
Leadership is a topic of the moment although it is not a new issue; it is an issue that has had an important relevance in the times of such
dense changes in which we are immersed. Historian James MacGregor Burns called leadership "one of the most observed and least
understood phenomena on earth." Given the results of some recent research, this no longer seems to be the case. Leadership
development consultants Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman published the results of a study they conducted on the skills leaders need to
succeed in their current positions. After analyzing the results, Zenger and Folkman obtained a classification of leadership skills that are
most important for success. Highlighting the following:
1. Inspire and motivate others
Great leaders create a vision of the future that is vivid and compelling, and that motivates employees to want to achieve it. A #LSD as a
leader can better help your team members connect what they do with the impact it has on customers and the digital environment in
which the organization operates
2. Shows high integrity and honesty
Great leaders are honest and transparent, and have high integrity: they do what they say they will do and follow their speech. It is
necessary that the #DSL is constantly informing the truth about the inevitability of the failure and especially about the digital reality that
is complex today.
3. Solve problems and analyze problems
This is one of the fundamental capabilities, the #LSD must be very well trained to solve the challenges and take advantage of the
opportunities. This requires that the #DSL is in continuous growth and development of his ability to analyze, be critical, be systemic,
seeing opportunities and possibilities to face the digital and non-digital challenges that exert the pressures of having confidence around
the digital context.
4. Drive for results
The results are elements that must come as consequences of perseverance to achieve it. A #DSL must be persevering to achieve results
and lead the company that serves levels of confidence in handling uncertainty.
5. Communicates powerfully and prolifically
Great leaders communicate with their people often and in various ways. Whether through personal conversations, team meetings, blog
posts, emails, phone calls or Skype calls, or any other means, leaders don't talk about communicating, they just do it. In this measure it is
necessary that the #DSL continuously understand and develop this capacity since it is a fundamental part of the development of its
function. It is clear that communicating is not any challenge; however, with continuous work these skills can be improved in order to be
