Foundation Newsletter Page 3 SCHOLARSHIP SPOTLIGHT T ammy Burley started Homeless High in November 2013 after hearing about a junior attending Satellite Beach High School who was living in her car in the parking lot of a nearby shopping center. After several years of hearing story after story, Burley decided to take action. That’s when she decided to make Homeless High “real.” Burley reached out to the Foundation last year to start a scholarship for homeless EFSC students. The scholarship offers $1,000 to a homeless student who is attending full time and who has a 2.5 minimum GPA. Preference goes to students coming right out of high school. Turns out, Burley tapped into a hot topic that is getting much deserved attention. Recently, the Foundation office received a call from a couple who were touched by a CBS Sunday Morning segment on homelessness among college students. Although the couple has limited income, they were so moved by the story they set up a recurring monthly payment to help fund our Homeless High scholarship. If you have a cause or program you care about but do not have the means to fund in full, give us a call. We may be able to suggest options for you to help in a meaningful way. Grateful Scholarship Recipients Celebrate he Annual Titan Scholarship Reception was held March 7 to honor donors and T recipients. It was a full house with attendees enjoying a nice meal followed by speakers and award recognition. Dr. Jim Richey told donors they were an important part of the EFSC family. The event featured guest speaker Mr. Sam Pak, who was awarded the first Distinguished Alumni Award. Mr. Pak shared his entrepreneurial story of becoming the face, founder and CEO of Appliance Direct. The award will continue to be a part of this event each year. Students and donors were individually recognized, and students received certificates for their achievements. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sullivan, donors of the Sally Sullivan Medical Scholarship with recipient Sibrena Scott “It is such a joyous evening. Seeing the donors connect with the recipients of their scholarships really makes the work we do at the Foundation all come together,” said Tonya Cherry, Donor Relations Coordinator. “I am proud and grateful to be a part of it all and I think the students and donors are as well.” Current students may apply for scholarships for the Fall 2019 semester from April 10 through June 12, 2019, on the EFSC Foundation online application system.
