January-February 2018 College Accomplishments
Academic Team Record Highlights:
A record number of 10 Eastern Florida State College
students made the 2018 All-Florida Academic Team for
their outstanding scholarship and work in the community.
(Student Enrollment, Diversity Initiatives, Employee
Relations, Community Awareness) • EFSC was the first state college in Florida to host
the event, an honor that reflects its commitment to
providing students excellent opportunities for the
future.
• The conference featured more than 700 participants
showing more than 400 innovative research projects
in a wide range of fields.
•
They represented more than 30 colleges and
universities from around state.
• The conference also featured recruiters from colleges
and universities across the U.S., including schools
such as Notre Dame.
• More than 200 students have participated in EFSC’s
Office of Undergraduate Research since it began a
few years ago.
• The program operates on all four campuses with
research in 18 disciplines, many of them in Science,
Technology, Engineering and Math, and others in
Liberal Arts.
• The EFSC program is a model for six other colleges
and universities in Florida that have built their own
undergraduate research courses.
Highlights:
• The 10 students are the most the college has ever
placed on the team, topping the 2017 record of eight
students selected for the honor.
• The All-Florida Academic Team consists of 141
students from the 28-member Florida College System
that includes Eastern Florida.
• The achievement is even more impressive considering
there are 800,000 students attending Florida state
colleges.
•
The EFSC students were selected based on high
achievement in the classroom, leadership on campus
and service to the community.
• They came from all four EFSC campuses.
•
One of the students, Michaylla Boring, was also
selected as a Gold Scholar on Coca-Cola’s 2018
National Academic Team from among 2,000 national
applicants.
Conference Spotlights EFSC

Conference, one of the most important meetings of
its kind in Florida and the U.S. (Student Enrollment,

Public Service Events
The college hosted two major events featuring leading
state and national figures showing the important public
service the college provides to the community through
enlightened civic engagement. (Community Awareness)
Highlights:
• The Constitution Revision Commission charged
with making proposed changes to the Florida
Constitution on the November 2018 ballot held a
major public hearing at the King Center.
• Hundreds attended the hearing, which was part of a
yearlong statewide tour by the commission to give
Florida citizens a voice in the important process.
• The commission was the third of its kind in state
history, meeting every 20 years starting in 1977-78.
• The King Center also hosted former Director of
National Intelligence James Clapper in an event
sponsored by the Rotary Club of Indialantic that
benefited the EFSC Foundation and student
scholarships.
• Clapper, a former Air Force general, served in the
administrations of Presidents Barack Obama and
George W. Bush.
• Clapper discussed national security threats posed
by Russia, China, North Korea, Iran and climate
change.
