March 2018 College Accomplishments
March 2018
Strengthened Security Measures
In light of the ever-growing number of school shootings
across the U.S., the college’s Security Office continued
to expand security measures to ensure the safety of
students, faculty and staff. (Employee Relations)
Highlights:
•
The college now has more than 100 Security
Officers patrolling all four campuses.
• There are more than 50-armed officers who receive
extensive training in how to respond to an active
shooter. Their first responsibility is to eliminate the
shooter threat.
• All Security Officers receive training on a regular
basis to enhance their skills and are required to
have a State of Florida license to be considered for
carrying a firearm.
• Some training consists of live fire active shooter
training and active shooter scenarios on all
campuses.
• Security Officers also receive training in the area
of use of force, and the use of pepper spray and
handcuffs.
• The college also has a robust Reserve Officer
Program to augment the Security Force, with most
Reservists current or former law enforcement
officers or having prior military police training.
•
Conducted more than 70 training sessions for
groups of students, faculty and staff the past
three years in how to respond to an active shooter
emergency.
• Training sessions include showing a Department of
Homeland Security video called “Run, Hide, Fight”
on active shooter emergencies and a discussion on
overall college security.
•
Conducted
numerous
classroom
security
assessments for individual faculty members upon
their request.
•
Changed the locks on all classroom and other
doors to ensure that people can easily secure the
doors from the inside in an emergency.
• All classroom and other building doors now remain
unlocked to ensure people can quickly use the
rooms as a refuge in a shooting emergency.
• Upgraded the phone system in all classrooms to ID
the location of a 911 call.
• Increased the number of security cameras on all
four campuses to improve surveillance.
• Established a Command Post for emergencies and
large-scale events.

agreements with Florida universities and state colleges
that guarantee admission for EFSC students who
