It is very important regarding the appropriate air
condition of Izmir. The annual solar energy distribution is
1.100-1.600 kWh/m 2 . Izmir has 1.680 kWh/m 2 sun per year.
In this concept, it is possible to say that the solar energy of
Izmir is above the average solar energy amount of Turkey.
Wave Energy
The potential of Izmir’s shores is indicated as high in
the “Wave Energy and the Technical Potential of
Turkey’s Wave Energy” that was prepared based on
“Turkish Shore Winds and Deep Wave Atlas”
created as a result of the Project NATO TU WAVE
sponsored by NATO’s “Science for Peace”
department.
The wind potential on the Aegean Sea and
Mediterranean Sea create, a concentration of 4-17
kW/m wave power per year. In this direction, the best places to benefit from wave energy
are the seas between Izmir-Antalya.
Izmir is a center of renewable energy as a result of her advantages coming from her high
potential in terms of wind, geothermal, biomass and solar energy and her geographic
location. Since there is a lack of location for wind energy in Europe, our country stands out
with its advantages. İzmir is the center for the suppliers through her location on the line
Çanakkale, Balıkesir, İzmir, Bodrum, from Thessaloniki to Bodrum.
Biomass energy
The 330 kW biogas plant that produces from animal
wastes and park-garden wastes which was established by
TUBITAK-MAM in partnership with Izmir Metropolitan
Municipality in Izmir, started operating in 2011.
However, it is observed that the biomass potential in
Izmir has not been revealed yet.
