Mrs. Agman’ s Inspiring Journey to Teaching Science

By Audrey Densmore
ENFIELD— Teachers come from many different backgrounds. Some know they want to teach right out of high school, while others pursue different careers before finding their way into education. One outstanding science teacher, Mrs. Agman, has taken a unique and inspiring path before arriving at Enfield High.
Mrs. Agman teaches chemistry at the general, honors, and AP levels. Known for her engaging personality and empathetic approach, she connects well with students and demonstrates a strong passion for her subject.
Her academic journey includes several prestigious institutions. She attended Miami Beach Senior High School and later studied chemistry at MIT, although she spent her sophomore year at the University of Miami to be closer to family. Between high school and college, she worked at the University of Miami School of Medicine in the nephrology department. She later earned her graduate degree in chemistry from UC Berkeley.
Originally, however, chemistry was not her plan.
“ When I was in high school, I thought I wanted to be a doctor, specifically a cardiologist, so that I could save my father,” she said.“ He passed away during my junior year of college, and I changed my path to physical chemistry.”
Afterward, she pursued Slavic Languages at Yale, where she also taught courses ranging from elementary language classes to advanced literature and cultural studies. She then attended UConn Law School, earning her law degree and becoming licensed in 2008. She spent 17 years working as an intellectual property attorney, focusing on trademarks and patent litigation.
Eventually, she returned to chemistry and now teaches at Enfield High. Along with Ms. Desrochers, she helped establish the school’ s science bowl team.
When asked why she chose Enfield, she said,“ Mr. Ponte was the reason I chose Enfield High School. He continues to be an incredibly supportive leader and mentor.”
