The Printer ’ s Lexicon

Language binds people . Every region or the professional group has its own dialect . There are special words that help the group to express certain phenomenons that are specific to the community . It is imperative that the production personnel are conversant with those words of their colleagues in the other departments of the industry . This enables better , faster and effective communication and also helps to improve the rapport between the various wings of the organization . e- VIBES plans to briefly explain a few catchwords that are being used in the various departments of the printing industry so that the production staff gets familiarized with them . We plan to do it through a series of articles in e-VIBES . In this maiden issue we have covered a few vital jargons of Editorial .
• ARTWORK : Materials to print , other than the text , such as photos , illustrations and diagrams .
• BANNER : The main headline that runs across the top of the front page .
• CAPTION : The brief description of a picture .
• EAR PANELS : Boxes above the name on the front page of the newspaper .
• FILLER : Materials used to fill space , usually promotional in nature .
• OPP-ED : An opinion column or article , especially the one that appears opposite to the editorial page .
• SCOOP : A story obtained and distributed ahead of the competitors ’ media .
• SIDEBAR : A secondary story related to a main story .
• BAD BREAK : A word that is incorrectly hyphenated or broken at the end of a line or text .
• JUMP : Text continued on another page .
• MASTHEAD : The newspaper ’ s name on page one .
• DATELINE : The line at the beginning of a story identifying the origin of the place of the story
• BYLINE : the line at the beginning of an article that gives the name of the writer .
• CREDIT LINE : Text that identifies the photographer , artist , illustrator or an agency , that contributed the material .
• CUT LINE : Caption or text near a photo that describes the action or identifies the subject ( s ).
• TRANSPOSE : To interchange two items . To switch the position of photos in the same page .
• FACING PAGES : The pages that run side by side but are separated by a ‘ gutter ’ or fold .
• TYPO : A typographical error while typing n .
