Career Sin # 5: Lacking Conformism

Even though conformism is a word which typically is negatively
charged being able to fit in and conform is important at a
workplace.
Many foreigners however have difficulties to let go of the “old
ways” and customs they have picked up in their own country.
Thus, they have troubles following rules, or putting up with
customs at a company.
Company culture, however, is important enough to mean your
promotion or sacking. This is unfortunately something that
many foreigners, especially ones coming from developing
countries, cannot understand.
Passionate newbie can also be an example here. They never
take the time to get to know the company ropes and strings
and thus fail their career by not understanding when to push
and when to pull back.
What to do?
No matter how smart you are or how right you think you are you
have to understand that signing a contract means that you
agree with the corporate rules. And you will conform.
That does not mean that you never get a chance to shine. It is
necessary however that you take the time to study the
company and understand its ways before you start suggesting
that they should be changed.
