Career Sin # 6: Lying
When you read the title you probably thought it was ridiculous
because you would never lie.
Think again. People lie both when applying for a job and while
working.
It might be about certain qualifications or a number of working
hours. It might be they said they were sick when actually being
lazy. But people lie.
The problem is that in the Digital Age lying is becoming more
and more difficult. We are a step away from a society where
every our step is recorded.
The number of people not getting a job because of a lie or
people losing a job for the same reason is big enough to
convince us that lying on the job is a serious career sin.
What to do?
It is simple: Do not lie. It is almost scary how easily a lie can be
caught and it is not worth the risk. If you lose a job because of
a lie you risk damaging your reputation. Same applies if you do
not get a job because of a lie.
Instead consider making your lies true: if you need
qualifications, acquire them. If you need time off, be honest.
Most companies are surprisingly understanding. If you however
feel, that your boss does not understand you, maybe you
should consider changing job instead.
